Eve’s Requiem and Me

October 14, 2019

A few years ago, Spider Road Press published one of my short stories in Eve’s Requiem: Tales of Women, Mystery, and Horror. I made an art quilt to commemorate the event (my story is called “The Family Tree”). The anthology must still be doing well, because on October 10 Spider Road Press offered an Instagram giveaway for those submitting their favorite quote or image from the book. Given that it is Halloween month, if you want to indulge in some spooky stories check out Eve’s Requiem (now with a new cover).

Confession Time

April 9, 2018

I entered college as a poetry major, switched to political science by my junior year because I thought it would be more practical, and ended up not using that degree anyway. I wrote poetry all through college, but gradually drifted into prose. Although I still compose a poem now and again, I think of myself as a novelist. Still, I was considering what I should do to celebrate April in this writing life blog, but couldn’t decide. Here’s where the confession comes in – my friend Patricia Flaherty Pagan of Spider Road Press tagged me in a Facebook post about her anthology In The Questions: Poetry by and about Strong Women. Spider Road Press is running a giveaway on Amazon for the next few days, and Patricia mentioned all of the authors included in the book in her post. Yup, I forgot that I was in the book.

I wish I could say my natural modesty got the better of me, but in truth my little gray cells just misfired. So, to celebrate Poetry Month, here is my poem.

The Matriarchal Elephant

The mirror tells me I am wise.

I have the wrinkles to fit the role,

and the silver hair.

My diaries go back to years

taught in history class.

Ask a question, I will answer,

give opinion,

advice,

admonition.

My life trajectory suited me

for counselor,

consoler,

coach and instructor.

Yet there are days

when I look for the real wise woman,

the matriarchal elephant,

for the mom to save us all.

On those days,

I cover the mirror.

Look for the giveaway on the Spider Road Press Facebook page, or you could buy the book immediately and enjoy the other poems now. Happy Poetry Month!

Blessings

August 27, 2014

I was going to call this week’s blog Rewards, but to be honest I didn’t do enough to earn the good fortune that came my way. Blessings fits much better.

I'm not a Viking, but I make up stories about them

I’m not a Viking, but I make up stories about them

These beads are a thank-you gift from my friend Maya Madhavan. They are based on Viking patterns. I’m writing a sci fi novel about space Vikings. Not only am I thrilled to receive such lovely beads, I’m doubly thrilled she remembered my work-in-progress.

Available in October

This is the cover of the anthology that includes one of my horror stories. There are no space Vikings, but there are Norwegians in Minnesota and a really scary tree. Getting published at all is a blessing for a writer, and getting published in a cool book with a cool cover is even better. Eve’s Requiem is from Spider Road Press, and will be available in October.

This space was empty for at least a week

This space was empty for at least a week

This bit of empty space is where Abby’s kennel used to be. Now, I have a bunch of stuff that could go in this space, but I didn’t want to be greedy. However, my daughter left us some storage bins and my husband agreed that they would fit the corner.

Not empty space, but still tidy

Best of all, I get to use the big blue box to stash Christmas gifts. This will be the first time in donkey’s years that I’ll be able to keep the presents together without having to find room in the studio (which usually means stuffing them under the least unstable pile and crawling around it for five months).

May your week be equally blessed.

The Family Tree

June 4, 2014

Once more with the shameless self-promotion – Spider Road Press will include my short story “The Family Tree” in Eve’s Requiem: Tales of Women, Mystery and Horror. The anthology (which will be published this fall) will focus on female heroines actively confronting danger. My story is about a young woman named Sylvia and what she discovers about the ancient oak that has guarded the family homestead for over a century.

Since I already have a tree series going in quilts, I made a small piece for the story.

I started with the outline, then beaded a burl.

Tree roots cry out to become beaded fringe, don’t you think?

Eve’s Requiem will have stories from female and male authors, and 5% of the proceeds will be donated to charity. My good friend (and fabulous writer) Patricia Flaherty Pagan is one of the editors.
